It was the only Japanese fighter to be powered by a liquid-cooled engine in the Pacific War, and was powered by the H40, a licensed version of the German Daimler-Benz DB601 engine, which was characterized by its streamlined nose and elongated wings. Among them, the Type I Ding, which had a 20cm longer nose, two 20mm machine guns in the fuselage, and two 12.7mm machine guns in the wings, had the largest number of aircraft in the series, about 1,360, manufactured between January 1944 and January 1945. With its superior high-altitude performance and heavy armament, the Feiyan I Ding was particularly effective in intercepting B-29s in the air defense of the mainland, and the efforts of the 244th Squadron, led by Squadron Leader Kobayashi, which was responsible for the air defense of the capital, are well known.(From the explanation of Tamiya Model)
"Hien" means flying swallow.
