EXTREMELY IMPORTANT FLYING GUIDE

Disclaimer:
This machine has been designed with PC in mind, Attempting to fly it on mobile devices will be extremely difficult due to the control scheme, This will lead to symptoms such as frustration, mental breakdown and self harm, please for the love of all things do NOT fly it on mobile.

BEFORE FLYING

Go into options and set landing gear to caps lock, or some other button that is comfortable to press repeatedly.
Why?
Well i shall tell you, in my desire to create realistic WW1 fighters I have bound the throttle to LandingGear to simulate the engine handling of a period rotary engine, they had no throttles, just a button/switch that turns the engine off and on, this is called a blip switch, The landing gear button is your blip switch.

De-Activate 8 after starting the engine.

HOW TO FLY

Well it is simple, you just fly it like a normal plane but keep in mind it stalls very easily and has the most primative throttle controlls known to man.

HOW TO LAND

Now this is extremely tricky, You have to come in very low and shallow and blip the engine [extending and retracting the landing gear] you have to be careful not to stall.
The best touchdown is with both wheels and the tail skid touch the ground at the same time, this makes sure you dont flip the plane over. do not use brake as it is very easy to flip the plane over.

HOW TO FIGHT

This plane comes with a Lewis Gun on the top wing, it has the performance of a real one so remember to be close to a target before opening fire as the spread is larger than the normal wing gun.
To aim the gun simply go to the camera looking down the barrel.

HISTORY OF THE S.1

This plane was a single seat biplane scout built by Martin-Handasyde Ltd. in 1914.

60 of the type were built and were used on the western front in WWI for a six-month period by the Royal Flying Corps in 1914 before it was deemed inadequate for frontline service and served in the training role.

It was intended for use as a home defence aircraft but proved inadequate for that also.

The S.1 was apparently inherently unstable and was disliked by pilots for man reasons including, high stall speed, low max speed, terrible aerobatic qualities and its 'heavy' controls.

One of the strangest stories of WWI aviation came about when Cpt. Louis Strange was fighting a German two-seater, he was changing a drum of ammunition for the Lewis gun (this requires the pilot to unstrap his harness and stand up in the cockpit) the aircraft flipped over and he fell still grasping the gun, suddenly the plane violently righted itself, he fell back in and broke the seat, the German crew was convinced they had seen Cpt. Louis fall out of his plane and claimed a kill, they were later shunned by comrades when no wreckage was found!

This was the first of a NEW series I am working on after I did a poll and found out people wanted more wing built planes.

I started and finished this one a few months ago.
I will happily add more WWI planes to my build list if anyone wants to make a request.

This took about a week as its relatively simple.

    I play on IOS and other than being lag tasctic it seems fine to me. Works great put the controls are indeed quit odd

    The only reason I like ones of this era is because of the adventures of Cpt. Bigglesworth. And it's also good if you live half an hour aw from the shuttleworth collection lol.@Tang0five

    Anyone who read biggles should know you had to “blip” the engine on landing! This is a lovely touch and very unique, bravo!

    Some planes did only have blip switches though. I haven't found it that hard to control, what part do you find hard about it? @EternalDarkness Oh and you will be glad to know that the next plane will have the mixture control, but it was FAR easier to control the engine than this one when it was blip only. I think it may have something to do with lift and drag.

    @PlanesOfOld I'm glad to hear that. Just blip switch is too hard to control. Can't wait to see a plane with "mixture control".

    @EternalDarkness I have come up with a slightly different throttle design that uses prop pitch to imitate a fuel mix changer for limited speed control, this combined with the blip switch is quite good.

    because, I tried. and it was infuriating due to the throttle controls being landing gear. its a lot harder than pc. @KerlonceauxIndustries

    Yes I have been looking for a way to improve it for the plane I'm currently working on, I will experiment with a few different methods. There was also the fuel mix switch that could change throttle slightly and various other ways to control speed. Blip switches (commonly on the control column) were used with a mix of other inputs, and were only used for taxi and landing as too much blipping set the engine on fire. @EternalDarkness

    I like the flip switch, but maybe set the engine to Ag1 input, and set its max input to 3, to speed up and slow down more gently. Engine block on these planes worked as a flywheel, afterall.

    Heres a good video showing a sopwith camel pilot using the blip switch a lot and the Wikipedia page has some good info on rotary engines in general.

    Sweet beans, it handles fine on my iPad. Was the real one either 0% or full throttle?
