After the USA Macon's close shave in 1935 it was decided to upgrade it's air fleet. A new model of Sparrowhawk was introduced. It possessed massively improved firepower and speed, yet retained the sharp turning ability of it's predecessor. At the start of WW2, despite the limitations of the biplane the Macon provided crucial service, managing to survive two tours of duty off the coast of Japan and shooting down almost thirty enemy fighters.
