The P3 is a military plane used to locate, report, and destroy land and water targets. The pole sticking out of the back of the plane is a "MAD boom" (Magnetic Anomoly Detector) which Is used to detect submarines. (When flying this, there is a %1 chance the plane will randomly explode when using autopilot.) PS. The original model carries bombs and cruise missles but It's a bit hard to build a bomb-bay in this game...
