This specific model was modified to carry 3 men with one pilot, one weapons operator and one navigator, the weapons operator and navigator both occupied the back of the plane. The modification was made so then the crew could carry out more precise strikes with a designated navigator

History

The original STURMER was created for desert use but this region specific model RAF 689 was modified by its squadron (617sqn) was modified for use in the forests of Siberia in the event of conflict. The aircraft here first was flown by captain Harry James of the RAF with Lance Corporal Barry Fletcher as his weapons operator but after the modifications they recruited Sergeant Thomas Wood of the Royal Mapping Corps as the navigator.

Their first operational mission was over Kosovo as part of the NATO task force so was painted in late 90s woodland camo! After taking off at around 19:00 the plane encountered an enemy tank convoy and engaged but the craft sustained combat damage meaning the pilot made a forced landing in Russia where the crew were captured and interned for the rest of the war!
