At the end of World War II, the Allies gained air supremacy over the European theater, and the German ground forces faced a huge air threat. In April 1944, the German military planned to develop a weapon that could accompany armored forces and provide effective anti-aircraft fire against Allied fighter-bombers. The plan called for the use of the chassis of the Panzer IV Ausf H medium tank, the main armament being the double-barreled 30 mm MK103 "Doppelflak" machine gun, which was originally used as an anti-aircraft gun on German XXI submarines with a fully enclosed hemispherical turret. The design was given to Remingdel AG and Daimler-Benz AG, and production was required to begin in September 1944.
