Unobtanium was anew material that they had recently discovered and it was not entirely crucial to starships as they where still able to fly to Pandora and presumably back
@MaliciousMuffin They went to mine unobtanium, which was a crucial resource in building starships, which humanity needed to evacuate earth's population, since it was overcrowded and faced global starvation
