Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat
[About Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat]
Wikipedia
The Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat was a ship-based fighter operated by the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Its development was closely related to the F4U, which had the same engine and was being developed at the same time.
In 1938, the U.S. Navy ordered manufacturers to develop new fighters to replace the F2A and F4F, which had been the mainstay fighters up to that time, and each company responded by developing new fighters. Among these, the fighter developed by Vought (later to become the F4U) was considered the mainstay for the Navy.
The first prototype of the F4U flew in 1940 and showed good performance. However, it became clear that it had various problems as a ship-borne aircraft.
Therefore, the U.S. Navy hurriedly ordered a fighter that had been under continuous development by Grumman as an "insurance policy" for mass production. This was the F6F.
The design of the F6F, which had been developed as "insurance," was a solid one. The basic fuselage layout followed the style of the F4F. Like the F4F, nicknamed the "Grumman Iron Works," it had a lot of armor protection.
The F6F first flew in 1942 and performed well. The F6F was then to take its place as the Navy's primary ship-based fighter, following in the footsteps of the F4U, which had been in development earlier but had not been able to eliminate its troubles.
The F6F's solid design and robust fuselage were well received by pilots. At the same time, the F6F was also a hardship for the Japanese forces on the Pacific front.
However, the F6F, which was developed as a pure fighter, suffered a setback after the war. With little versatility and poor ground attack capability, the F6F was retired shortly after the war. Instead, it was its rival at the time of its development, the F4U, which continued to be active until the Korean War, taking advantage of its high versatility and high performance.
[About the work]
The cockpit is roughly reproduced.
I have not verified this because I do not have Simple Planes VR. Sorry.

Extraordinary work, the part count is really low for the looks and functionality of this thing.
great plane but it isnt very good for landing. i can easiky land on a ton of other tail draggers but not this one
is there a version with bombs and rockets?
Dude your builds impress me every time
I've hardly ever seen precision like that in the langing gear/wheel wells. Amazing plane all round.
this plane is awesome
Let’s goo
Awesome dogfighter
Looks very shmexy
@AntonWings absolutely agreed.
I can promise you this, as you become more and more experienced with SimplePlanes you’ll start to find ways to use less parts to achieve a desired output.
There’s so many great techniques used here and I love seeing it.
I flew it recently and the flight model isn’t great in terms of replication - it feels more arcade like. Though if this is preferred then that’s fine. It’s your build that you’re sharing with us.
@The26thMeowng true but idk. The flogger has some god awful stuff down there too
Beautiful...
Funny how I was searching for an F6F that can replace the ancient one in my list, then here's one showing up right on the front page as I logged in.
@Kangy
Thank you for your comments!
I was very particular in making the fuselage shape as close to the actual aircraft as possible this time. I am very happy to hear your compliments on the shape of the fuselage.
Although the number of parts is a bit large. I was not able to create many detailed parts this time.
It is very difficult to reproduce the exact shape with as few parts as possible.
@Kangy valid points, but everyone in SP knows that the F4F landing gear is definitely the most dreaded godforsaken LG known to human kind

Thank you all for your comments :)
The next one is under consideration.
Nice plane! You should give it the VR tag so it can be flown in VR!
This is a really good build!
The nose’s scoop inlet is really good, most hellcats on the site should use this technique but don’t.
I’m glad you’ve left the gap between the verti stab and the tail, again most hellcats here miss such details.
The gear is also amazing to see done properly, a hellcat is possibly one of the toughest subjects to properly replicate in sp due to that.
The canopy and spine of the fuselage is very well done too.
One thing I think should be done in future is some of the more minute external details such as some of the aerials atop the spine around half a metre from the rear of the canopy, there’s a few other things but I wont gargle on I think my point is made.
Haven’t flown it yet so I won’t comment on the FM.
Great work Anton!
sure is nice to see more hellcats in the community
can you try a f7f or f8f next maybe???
yooooo
muito bom, achei tão confortável
