History: The Douglas XF-412A Lance was designed in 1961 as a land-based naval attack and reconnaissance aircraft. It sat one pilot in the far-forward fuselage. The propeller engine was mounted mid fuselage (like the Airacobra) driving two contra-rotating propeller blades. It also had a rear-mounted jet engine which gave the aircraft a top speed of around 420mph. It also had an ejector seat. The advanced radar hub was mounted on the belly of the fuselage which gave it the greatest opportunity to detect enemy aircraft. The type was exported to England, the Netherlands, and West Germany. It was pulled from the USAF, USMC, and the USN in 1973, 1980 for the RAF, and is still in service as a low-speed attack/reconnaissance aircraft in the RNA (Royal Netherlands Airforce).
