The MiG-24(MiG-23K in prototype) was the solution of the Soviet Navy to replace the Yak-38, and was derived from the MiG-23(essentially a kitbash/upgrade of the MiG-23 for the Soviet Navy) . The role of this aircraft was to be multirole(Anti-Ship Warfare, Fleet Air Defense, Interception) and was to be the part of the aircraft strike teams of the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.

It entered service in 1987, and 25 aircraft where built in 1987-1988. It was not planned to be exported, but a deal was made to the Indian Naval Air Arm at 1997, just 6 years after the collapse of the USSR. It was planned to be replaced by the MiG-29K, but it was modernized and put back to service due to the MiG-29K's lack of Anti-Ship capability.

In 2013, over 150 where made and exported to other countries' naval air forces, and it received an upgrade in 2015: the MiG-24S(Variant coming soon)
