The Y-8 transport aircraft (Y-8), also known as Hongpeng, is a medium-range medium-range multi-purpose transport aircraft produced by China Aviation Industry Shaanxi Aircraft Manufacturing Company. The aircraft is derived from the An-12B model purchased by the Soviet Union, and its performance is similar to that of the earlier US C-130. The Y-8 can accommodate six crew members in the cockpit, including the front and rear pilots, navigators, messengers, air mechanics and tail gun shooters. The Y-8 can be used for a variety of purposes such as airdrop, airborne, transportation, life-saving and maritime operations. Shaanxi has made a series of improvements to the Y-8 and developed a variety of professional models, including military and civilian models. In addition, Shaanxi has developed a new generation of Y-9 based on the Y-8, and will continue to manufacture new aircraft on this platform. As of 2010, 169 Y-8 aircraft have been produced.
