Complicate and add wings!

Recommended Mod

This car was built with the Elliptical Grip Model mod in mind. Can still be driven without it, but experience may not be the same as with having it installed and activated.

This car is best driven with a gamepad, steering wheel or in VR. The handling is meant to be somewhat similar to what you see in the game Grand Prix Legends. Although i cannot say if it is VR combatible, if it isn't, mention it in the comments, i'll update the XML with a fix.

This is the BMR 310B, Bavaria Motor Racing's 1969 F1 car for all cornering focused tracks.

History

1968 marked a downturn in BMR's F1 efforts, specially when compared to 1967, first year of the 3000cc Engine Formula. The introduction of Downforce generating wings in the previous year by Team Lotus and later implementation by other teams like Matra took away the advantage that BMR had in the midfield, Therefore, partway through 1968, development in the current car was completely stopped in order for more focus on the put on their 1969 entry, which now had a shift in focus from raw engine power to improvements in suspension technology and aerodynamics.
The car started life as the BMR 512, a project with the original objective of entering the inaugural season of the Formula 5000 rule set into the SCCA Formula A championship, but due unreliability of the tested 5 liter V12 engine based on BMR's 1967 F1 spec V12-3-A, was later scrapped. However, the chassis was still well designed and competitive, therefore it was simply modified to fit F1 regulations. Wings were the primary modifications done to the chassis during development, utilizing the latest wind tunnels available in West Germany, at great expense for the Formula 1 team.
However, the modified chassis and original V12-3-A were a heavy combination, specially due to all reinforcements done to the transmission, wings and front suspension, therefore weight was cut down from the engine, to decrease the load and stress put into the rear. Two cylinders were removed from the V12 engine, turning it into the V10-3-A(Mod), with all other cylinders having their bores and strokes increased to match the 3000cc formula. On the dyno, the engine was noted reaching a max power output of 492 Horsepower and 280N-M of Torque at 7200 RPM, but extended testing at the max RPM range of the engine, which went up to 8400, showed it would knock after a while, so timings were adjusted to alter the power-bands to the new RPM limit of 6000. The finished engine with revised and optimized power-curves and internals now clocked 420 HP and 270N-M at 5600 RPM, about on par with the Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine, equipped by teams like Lotus and Matra International (championship winning duo of Matra and Ken Tyrrell's team, driven by Jackie Stewart and Jean-Pierre Beltoise).
At the first round of the season, in Kyalami, South Africa, the team performed fairly well, although still being around the midfield. Drivers Lars Hanelsen and Patrick Leisley had an uneventful race, with Leisley scoring a 6th place. They were seen talking to the team after the race about how they felt shifting so close to the redline felt unnatural, but yet could adapt. The following two rounds were scoreless, with Hanelsen retiring in Monaco with two misfiring pistons. At Zandvoort, for the Dutch Grand Prix, Hanelsen barely missed out on a podium, finishing just behind 3rd place Jo Siffert.
For the Italian Grand Prix, in Monza, the high speed nature of the track brought the BMR 310A, a wingless, stiffer version of the car. However, both drivers crashed late in the race after Leisley was moving for an overtake on Hanelsen at the Parabolica corner, resulting in contact after the former hit a bump on corner exit, which caused a sudden loss of grip not correctable without wings. Both cars went uncontrolled straight into a guardrail. Thankfully, their cars slowed down enough for them to leave with just a few bruises before both cars burst into flames due to a leaking fuel tank in one of the cars
As the season progressed, more midfield teams caught up to BMR in the development front, the season started looking somewhat bleak, with less and less opportunities for points paying positions. By the end of the season, they finished 5th overall for the International Cup for F1 Manufacturers with 8 total points, just ahead of Ferrari and BRM by a single point, 30 points behind 4th place finishers, McLaren.
The car was later used with a revised, F5000 spec V12-5-B(Mod) in the 1970 and 1971 SCCA Formula A seasons, dominating the overall championships with both Leisley and Hanelsen at the wheel

This car has taken me way too long to finish, primarily because i got disinterested in SimplePlanes after many, many years of playing all the time. My focus shifted into simracing, primarily Assetto Corsa, Stock Car Extreme, GTR2 and rFactor.
While i still am uninterested in playing SP (and still have no desire to go and properly finish the Geist), i may come back, maybe with SP2, maybe later, who knows?

Anywho, hope ya'll like the car!
