Designed in late 1949 as a cheaper alternative to the Centurion, the FV4205 would have been lighter, more lightly armored, but would have a 120mm rifled cannon. The tank was built around the gun, which meant taking the basic design for the Centurion turret and modifying it to fit the larger cannon. The hull was also different. Instead of having the whole side of the vehicle slope outwards, only the upper part above the track sponsons would have been sloped (and sloped to a higher angle). The tank could reach speeds of around 35-40 miles per hour (56-64 kilometers per hour). It had a crew of four, consisting of a driver, commander, gunner, and loader. Only one prototype was built, and after testing showed that the suspension would not be able to handle long-term use of the cannon, the vehicle was locked up in storage. It now sits as the gate-guardian of the Aerostyle Military Museum in Illinois.
