The saxon a-42 sea dog

for feiwu's seaplane challenge

Link to his challenge

The saxon a-42 was first designed by saxon boat works company in the early part of 1936 for the US navy to be used as a reconnaissance aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water as well as being able to land on land or an aircraft carrier with out the need for an arresting hook. It was able to adhere to 2 of the 3 requirements but landing on an aircraft carrier of the time was difficult and it was no able to land successfully. It was a minor setback but saxon was given a contract to produce this plane for base operation and costal watch. By 1941 1743 were made in the A ( which is shown here) the B, and C models. After the attack of pearl harbor saxon built the D model which was produced in limited numbers and only had a rear facing coaxial mounted machine gun and 1 forward facing 25mm cannon with 75 rounds of ammunition. this was the final model and was discontinued in march of 1942. The story though doesn't stop here it was a successful plane in use for the coast guard, US navy and US army for reconnaissance roles. Over 500 were shipped to the allied nations with most going to the British though 50 were sent to Russia. The british made their own variants by trying to make a torpedo bay in the hull of the plane but this wasn't successful. They did though replace the 2000hp areno i12's with the areno a130-22's which made 2700hp each. The last plane was used for missile testing on march 18 1972 and ending the existence of the a-42.

engines

2 areno i12-34aaw radial engines producing 2000hp each

armament

None

controls

Normal flight controls
Vtol for flaps ( could figure out how to make them actually work so their mainly for aesthetics)
Ag1 + LandingGear pontoons
Ag2 air brakes

fetures

Working stick
Custom roll and pitch control surfaces
Working trim tab
Working throttle lever
2 cameras, one at pilot seat and one at co-pilot seat
Full glass canopy

basic flight stuff

For takeoff it does veer off to the right for some reason I cant figure out why you can just use yaw though. The takeoff speed is around 200mph on both land and water. At the beginning it will need full trim but once it gets up to speed you can let the trim down a bit. During flight it does list to the right ( again I have no idea why) so I guess just live with it.

    @APilotOfPlanes honestly I didn't realize the difference between a yoke and a stick till you said. Again I dont know as much as you so I didn't know these things before you started to tell me them. I thought it was around this size, this is pretty big man. I have realistic expectations for the speed of a plane and again I didn't know this stuff before so I couldn't have done these things you wanted me to do

    @ParziParziTheVal @PapaKernels
    So,
    1. Trim levers are on very old planes, and they are rare.
    2. About what I mean by "stick": he claimed to have a stick in the plane, but yokes are present instead.
    3. About the Catalina, don't you realize it is way larger than this?
    4. 6500 drag points is too much for GA. It is private jet level. Also, remember that you don't take into account the general amount of drag; instead you go with whatever can get you to a realistic speed with realistic power. Also, you may have too high of an expectation for the speed of the planes.

    @ParziParziTheVal I was watching a vid on youtube where they were in an old b17 and it had a trim lever, and that's what I'm talking about. I had no idea he was pilot in training, that's pretty sick not gonna lie. 6595 drag points for something this big is pretty good. It was at around 15000 before I started to decrease drag. Well what about the PBY Catalina? It was a reconnaissance float plane

    @FeiWu I normally spend 2 hours a day in simpleplanes so I have alot of time to work on planes. I think the most time I spent on a plane was 1 week

    @PapaKernels and about the 4000hp, just do calculateDrag false for smaller parts

    @PapaKernels And where I wanted the wings isn't where you put it. If wings were always where the designers thought it would look best basically no planes would ever fly. Be rational.

    @PapaKernels It is true, however, that your effort and build quality is increasing, as evident in your battleship. It looks really nice.

    @PapaKernels About the time thing:
    You only post twice a week? Wow. How many players actually post two or more high quality builds per week? Not that many. I usually spend two months or more working on my planes.

    @FeiWu that's also where I wanted the wings, and I couldn't use a gyro. I sware whenever I dont want to use a gyro I need a gyro and any other time I dont need it

    @FeiWu the game mechanics means that I needed it to be 4000hp to get it to the speed it needs. Bruh dont bust on me cause I dont know as much as you, I know enough to be dangerous but that's not it.

    @FeiWu OK BUDDY LISTEN HERE I spent 15hour on this and this is the result. That is so un fair to tell me that I dont have quality builds. I try ok? I worked hard to get to the quality I'm at, and seriously I only post 1-2 planes a week but that's because I just have a lot of free time on the weekends to make planes. I make quality builds but you dont see that because all you see is some kid who made a submission to your challenge. I use the nudge tool alot, and I'm trying to understand the principles that I need to make stuff fly better. My next plane is really high quality and it seriously only took me 2 hours to make. The battleship I posted yesterday took me about 8hours just to do the main shape, and making the critiques took around 4 hours. Its highly un fair to tell me I don't make good stuff

    @PapaKernels Some other problems I noticed in your description and the plane:
    Do you know what a stick is?
    Do you know what trim tabs are and how they work?
    Why is there only one thrust lever?
    Why is there a trim lever in place of a trim wheel where another throttle lever should be?
    Do you know how overkill twin engines and 4000hp is for a two-seater? In comparison, the C172S produces 180hp and the DC3, in a comparable era, produces 2400hp and that's an AIRLINER.
    I appreciate the effort, but I expected more effort and diligence when you submitted this plane. Sorry.
    And @ParziParziTheVal what do you think of this plane? You're arguably a more experienced pilot lol

    @PapaKernels And the stuff about trim:
    You can just move the wings forward a bit. It seems like you either don't know the nudge tools, or you don't test your planes for some reason. Like your last plane you entered in the airliner challenge. That one doesn't even fly without a gyro.

    @PapaKernels About your claims:
    There is no rudder trim. Why do I have to hold it for so long? This is not even the yaw that we get irl. It is a lot more annoying.
    Yes. We can use trim. But there's a problem with having to pull up even with FULL TRIM. So you think max speed is using full throttle forever? No. We don't use full thrust except during takeoff irl. Therefore using MAX TRIM is not enough even in cruise.
    You had nearly a month to do this. I think some more effort would be better. ngl, you are one of those users who spam half-decent stuff frequently to get you here. I believe in quality over quantity.

    @FeiWu well counter yaw,and that why you have trim, after take off and you get to around max speed full trim would be perfect. I had to skimp out in some places because it was getting caught up with the actual handling of the plane, I tried everything I could to make it this good so

    @PapaKernels Grading time.
    I don’t feel like giving detailed critiques for this, because of the obvious lack of effort that needs to be addressed in some places. The takeoff is risky at best because of the yawing and the plane constantly pitches down. Also, the pontoons and ailerons all have to clip through the wing for some reason. Not cool.
