The PzKpfw-III (German: Panzerkampfwagen III), was a German World War II medium tank. Originally known as the ZW in response to inspections by the League of Nations, the Panzerkampfw-III had various derivatives and improvements and was used extensively by the German Army in World War II, with improvements and derivatives serving until the end of the war.The Panzer III was used in the Polish Campaign, the French Campaign, the North African Campaign and the Eastern Front. At the outbreak of the Polish campaign, only 98 very early versions of the Panzer III (mainly the D) were available for use. As a result, the No. 3 tank did not become the main force in the Polish campaign.A total of 350 No.3 tanks took part in the French campaign, and although the F type was in production by then, most of the No.3 tanks were fitted with 37mm guns that could not effectively penetrate the armour of the Allied tanks against the British and French. Despite this, the III was still the best German tank of the time and far outperformed the French R35.While on the Eastern Front, because of the generally poor road conditions on the Eastern Front, the No. 3 tank often suffered much more wear and tear than the Soviet tanks. As a result, the III tank had begun to fall behind compared to the KV series and T-34 tanks, which were both equipped with 76.2mm guns and thicker armour. However, because most of the Soviets' main tanks were still BTs and T-26s, and because of good German training and the excellent ergonomics of the Panzer III, in 1941 the Panzer III was able to achieve an exchange ratio of 1:6 for enemy destruction. distance to penetrate the armour of the T-34, but still could not effectively counter the KV tank. Therefore, after the Battle of Kursk, the No.3 tank was relegated to the second line for infantry fire support and training purposes. Its main role was taken by the No.4 and Leopard tanks.
