NASA AD-1 Oblique Wing Testbed

Mod DeezDucks  8.5 years ago

A little project that I did when I was bored. It has a top
speed close to the actual AD-1 and has the pivoting wing like it to! (Duh) VTOL Up to move the wings (No VTOL Down cause the real AD-1 only could pivot its right wing forward). Hit 1 for steering on the ground and that's it for the controls! To get the plane to fly with pivoted wings first set it on autopilot then rotate the wings. You can do this manually without autopilot but it will require a lot of constant adjustments. Happy flying! =3

It's aviation gems like these that we don't see enough of on SP.com.
This, along with NASA lifting bodies and other X-Planes.

I love oblique wing planes! This makes me want to do a remake of my earliest oblique build

@DeezDucks It worked didn't it? I Think did decrease drag and improved full efficiency?

@Rugpeersdude it was a experiment to decrease drag and improve fuel efficiency.

Looks really cool ; ) I did a simple version of this concept ages ago (you could check it) but I never knew there was a irl project. My concept thoughts behind what I did was to stabilize the plane in turns avoiding the passenger cabin (use imagination) to move as least as possible. But the wings were free, so they would auto balance. It's quite an interesting concept to play with : P

I wonder what the purpose of the rotating wing was.
