About the aircraft, ET-AVJ
The aircraft, ET-AVJ, was a 4 month old Boeing 737-8 Max first delivered to Ethiopian Airlines in November 2018. On March 10, 2019, the aircraft crashed following a loss of control due to the aircraft's MCAS failing, causing the aircraft to enter a nose dive.
The crash of Ethiopian Flight 302
The aircraft took off from Addis Ababa airport at 8:38 and the flight had been normal up until 8:30, when the aircraft suddenly entered a nose dive, despite this the pilots were able to pull the nose up just enough to stop the MCAS from diving. After the first MCAS activation the MCAS activated a second time, and this time the pilots shut off the electrical trim tab system, and while this disabled the MXAS software, it also disabled the ability to trim the stabilizer into a neutral flight position. At 8:31 the pilots had requested to return back to the airport, which was granted, the aircraft was now accelerating past the safety limits of the 737 Max. At 8:43, the pilots turned the electrical trim tab system back on, hoping to pull the nose up, but in doing that the MCAS turned back on, making the aircraft dive further, the pilots tried to pull the nose up manually with the yoke, but that proved useless. At 8:44, 6 minutes after takeoff, the aircraft hit the ground at almost 700 miles an hour, all 157 people on board passed away.
