Worth Industries TE150 (early)
Turbo-electric locomotive and tender set
Rank: II

USER MANUAL

Designed for SimplePlanes Railway (SPR) and High physics quality. However, switches cannot be used.

CONTROLS

VTOL up: Independent Brake
Trim up: Throttle
Landing Gear: Reverser
AG7: Lights

NOTICE:

  • There are 9 levels of throttle and brake each, from 0 (disengaged) to 8.
  • The game's Brake input should not be used as service brakes. It can be used as a parking brake if desired.
  • The cockpit throttle and brakes have priority over the Trim and VTOL controls. If the cockpit controls are set to level 1 or above, the associated game control will have no effect.
  • There is a simple circuit breaker simulation. See the section titled "Circuit Breaker".
  • Temperature and brake pressure displays are for visual detail only.
  • Probably VR compatible until you have to reset the circuit breaker.

CIRCUIT BREAKER

Generally, higher power levels and lower speeds will increase the current delivered to the electric motors. However, improper driving can overload the electric motor circuit. The main ways to overload the circuit are:

  • Applying tractive effort in the direction opposite of motion, and
  • Using excessive power when starting with load.

A current limit of approximately 1200 A is in place to prevent damage to the electrical circuit. If the current limit is exceeded for a short duration, the circuit protection system will be triggered, which will cause the motors to be disabled. The system can be reset using the following process:

  1. Move the throttle lever back to the neutral position.
  2. Interact with the button on the panel at the back of the cabin.

DEV COMMENTS

The project exists so I can finally make a train, but not "just" a train. Jet engines and steam boilers are very roughly cylindrical, so what if you can make such a jet train?

It is made compatible with SPR, and it is very stable on normal tracks. Unfortunately, there are no long straights. In addition, the long frame and steam-style axle layout make it impossible to turn on the switches. Some design features are only there due to failed attempts to get the train around switches.

The throttle/brake action and interior are both based on trains in Derail Valley. I haven't played it, but I have watched a certain nut-eating rodent play it. The train brake is not simulated as there is barely a train.

I referenced a funny name in the lore. The fictional timeline states that at the start of period II, the former USA is split into the American Union, New Confederate, and an independent California. Only 4% of people on Earth (are forced to) know about a certain backstory. Out of these, half of them feel strongly against it. Surely, nothing bad will happen :clueless:

Somebody please make a long train map :prayge: (I am also supposed to see if the SPR tracks can be modified with certain Unity packages)

INFORMATION

The TE150 is a turbine-electric locomotive designed by Worth Industries for its 150th anniversary. The steam locomotive-styled train is driven using electric motors powered by a turboshaft engine, representing the past, present, and future of the company.

20 units were produced, all of which ran on various passenger and freight lines operated by the locomotive's manufacturer. The model ran on the newly introduced limited express service along the Southwest Main Line, which is scheduled to run at an average speed of 90 mph.

However, the TE150 would be most well known for its brief tenure on the Canyon Line, a tourism service in Arizona that aimed to let its passengers experience "the long-lost adventurous feeling of train travel". Due to cost efficiency concerns, Worth Industries would replace the TE150 on the Canyon Line after just three years of service with a smaller turbo-electric locomotive.

Engine

The gas turbine engine is the centerpiece of the locomotive. The engine has a diameter of 1.9 m (6 ft. 2 in.) and is largely an upscaled copy of an old airliner engine. It can run on a variety of gasoline and kerosene-based fuels, as well as the high specific energy fuels that were becoming increasingly affordable at the time.

The engine was fairly overbuilt to withstand typical events that can introduce foreign object debris, like sandstorms. However, it can still be damaged from larger objects like stones, tree branches, or litter from platforms. Some TE150s would be modified with front cages to protect the turbine's blades from heavy debris.

Worth Industries

This heavy industry company operates from the South-Central Economic Hub in the New Confederation. It started out manufacturing trains, and has since diversified to power generation and factory equipment.

It is most widely known among the public for operating passenger and freight lines connecting the South-Central Economic Hub to the West Coast.

@hpgbproductions the emd sd40-2 does have a control stand similiar to the DE6

@DatTrainGuy19 easy source to learn train stuff
also there's only so many ways to put the 3 levers sideways, surely there are real trains that do this🤔

    THEORETICALLY

If you could have some sort of smooth engage/disengage clutch mechanism and a stupid amount of gear reductions, it would be possible to have a turboshaft Shay

@HuskyDynamics01 i fully copied derail valley gameplay xdd
it's a turboshaft engine based on a turbojet, but still quite inefficient. It's only justified by having cheap magic jet fuel.
I considered a hydraulic or mechanical transmission but it wouldn't work for this design. Now I wonder if jet exhaust can run gas cylinders

Also I love the design and how you made it work (and genuinely look good while doing so) but running a set of traction motors off of a generator on a turbojet engine has to be one of the most inefficient ways possible to power a locomotive lol
