Background

The M736 Tusker is a self propelled gun designed to be a relatively light weight vehicle for rapid movement on roads and in built-up areas in response to various contingencies. Tusker can successfully attack much larger armored fighting vehicles as well as personnel, using its large caliber gun. The intention is for the Tusker to act as both as a rapid reaction asset against conventional incursions and as a counter-insurgency vehicle against asymmetrical attacks in urban areas of by enemy special forces, intelligence operatives, or their proxies.

The vehicle uses a modular armor system and has a triangular bottom to protect itself from IEDs or mines.

The 130mm or 120mm main gun is automatically loaded to enhance the off-road combat capabilities of the vehicle as well as reduce crew fatigue. Most newer vehicles are equipped with a 120mm breech loading Gun/Mortar system for indirect and direct fire capability.

The M736 is capable of being equip with Urban Survival Kits to protect itself at close distances such as Slat Armor. Active protection systems such as "Trophy" are also equipped to protect itself from ATGMs. The vehicle is a variant of the Alligator AMAV and is fitted with modular ballistic protection composed of interchangeable modules of various thickness and can be tailored to suit almost any mission requirement. Heavy armor is removed during peacetime and for transportation. However it is restored once the vehicle arrives in the combat theater. Maximum protection level is against 40mm APFSDS rounds. Vehicle also has a top-class mine protection and can withstand a 12kg blast of TNT. Two vehicles were struck by RPG-7 rockets during the Lanner War, however armor was not penetrated and vehicles managed to return to base. NBC protection and fire suppression systems are standard.
