The FH-1 Phantom was the first purely jet powered aircraft to sucsessfully land on a United States aircraft carrier, and was the first jet aircraft deployed by the United States Marine Corp. First flown in in January of 1945, and introduced sometime in 1947, the Phantom was not a highly produced aircraft with only 2 prototypes and 60 production aircraft being built, the Phantom was retired by both the Navy and the Marine Corp soon after in 1949, but was kept in the Navy Air Reserve up until 1954. Although its service was short, the Phantom paved a way in naval fighter jet technology, and was followed up by the F2H Banshee which was very successful during the Korean War.
