Lockheed EWA-141 Owl
Main description
The Lockheed EWA-141 was an AWACS aircraft that was made from converted and retired C-141 in order to extend the lifespan of the C-141 Starlifter.
As of 2024, only 4 EWA-141s are in service, mainly planned to be replaced as they are too old and harder to maintain efficently.
The overall conversion variant, the EWA-141, is very successful, as it was used along the E-3 Sentries and other aircraft to protect its territories.
History
As a proposal by the U.S Air Force, they commissioned to extend the lifespan of the C-141 and give it an another dedicated role, which was electronic warfare as an AWACS, and so, Lockheed came up with the EWA-141, the U.S Air Force initially declined, but after a few modifications done that were needed, it was accepted. The testing stage and prototype were completed in the mid 1990s, and it was officially entered into service in the 2000s.
The EWA-141s first participated in the Iraq War, and was generally well liked by its pilots, and its staff on board the aircraft. It would later draw out of the war and the role that it was filling for was replaced by the E-3 Sentry instead later due to maintenance
Retirement slowly came and it was officially retired in 2015, marking the EWA-141 out of service in mainline operators, the only area that it was operated in was Iran as of 2024.
