Despite the "TU" designation, the Tornado is not designed by, or inspired by Tupolev. It's designation means, "Tactical Utility". The TU-40 Tornado was designed to operate a variety of support and combat roles, such as ECM, Medium bomber, reconnaissance, counter insurgency and so on. The Tornado is equipped with flexible wings unlike previous ATLAS aircraft, to help increase lift for taking off from aircraft carriers.
