INTRODUCTION

The Dastin Aerospace Virago F.13 is an environment, all weather, twin engine air superiority fighter designed by Dastin aerospace (at the time a joint venture between Tiran Aerospace and Altica-Harvey) for the Winolian air force. The F.13 had a protracted development and was nearly scrapped numerous times due to the technological hurdle faced.

It is the only Winolian fighter to receive a NATO designation due to its similarity to the Flanker family of aircraft. It is known as the Flanker-X. It design similarity came from the fact that Sukhoi engineers shared engineering and prototype data with Tiran covertly in what was one of the most controversial deals in Winolian history. This would result in their allies attempting to place harsh economic embargoes of Winolian trade.

Although initially designed for the air war, designers envisioned its future as a heavy, all role platform capable of the same level of versatility as its predecessor. It would be developed into a variety of platforms such as the F.13D Strike Virago and the EFA-18 OZ. The F.13 entered service in 1993.

VARIANTS

F.13D Strike Virago

The strike Virago was developed as a capability upgraded for the F.13B trainer to turn it into a strike platform. Improvements included the incorporation of better ground search radar, integration with targeting pods as well as upgrades which would allow a WSO to operate and manage stores and targeting from the rear seat. The Strike Virago also saw the incorporation of extended rearward jamming suites in order to degrade the effectiveness of SHORAD IR and radar systems.

EA.18 OZ

The OZ, named after the wizard of OZ, is an extensive conversion of the D model into an electronic warfare and SEAD platform and aptly named. Many of the internal systems have been updated to suit the mission. Wingtip jammer pods are mounted in place of launch rails and the IRST was removed from the aircraft. The aircraft is equipped with a license model of the AN/ALQ-99 and Winolian HIT-60 Savage anti-radiation missiles.
