History:
The 1970s and 1980s of the last century were the climax of the cold war. Both the two camps of the East and the West went all out to develop sophisticated weapons to become the killer trump card in future wars and to strive for the commanding heights of technology. The famous "Star Wars" program of the United States is a typical example of this. The Soviet Union, because laser weapons are the most easily realized in the "future weapons" concept, has listed them as a key R & D project.
In the late 1970s, the Soviet military proposed to design a vehicle-mounted laser weapon system, which would be installed on a mobile chassis to destroy the enemy's technical equipment with powerful lasers and enhance its own ground armored assault capability. In the early 1980s, the military industry department of the Soviet Union developed the 1K11 laser weapon system, which was mounted on the chassis of an armored personnel carrier. However, the power was small and the power was weak. At most, it was a dazzling effect. It could not be regarded as a real laser weapon.
Subsequently, the Soviets modified the vehicle-mounted laser weapon system nicknamed Optimism, based on the ZSU-23-4 "Shilkha" self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, with a high-powered laser transmitter mounted on it. Once in a test using a laser beam burned 9.65 km away from the helicopter electronic equipment, so that it crashed. At the end of the 1980s, the Soviet Union proposed the development of a large weapon-grade "self-propelled laser complex" that would be more sophisticated and powerful than "optimistic", in order to develop a true laser tank.
