The XF-11 is a military spec plane designed by Howard Hughes. The U.S. Military ordered 100 models, but only 2 prototypes were developed. This is due from Howard’s test flight of one of the models resulting in an oil leak, inverting a prop, and crashed into the Beverly Hills Country Club. Howard did indeed survive the crash. The second prototype was a success, but manufacturing never got underway. This plane is what also led to the U.S. wanting Hughes to build the plane we all know and d love, the H-4, or the Spruce Goose.
