History: In late 1942 when the production of the GS-12 Ausf.D would come to a close, the Gunther-Schmitt company created a new version of their highly successful heavy fighter. They decided to make the Ausf.E (before production began it was called the Model E) a single-seat aircraft to house the more advanced radar systems. The nose was also shortened a little bit, the pilot's seat was made more comfortable, and several more changes were made. The most notable of these was that the engines were modified to house contra-rotating propeller blades, giving the aircraft a top speed of over 520 miles per hour (when the drop tanks had been jettisoned). The designers were initially concerned at how fast the aircraft could go, so they installed a primitive ejection seat system (the pilot would pull down on a lever to pop the canopy off and launch the seat out of the cockpit). The Luftwaffe high command instantly fell in love with the aircraft, and within days of the aircraft being unveiled it went into production. From early 1943 until the end of the war, over 5,000 Ausf.E aircraft were produced.
