After the success of the Albatros N.XVIII (N.18), the N.XX (N.20) built upon the existing airframe. It combined firepower, speed, and maneuverability into one neat package. Easy to fly, rugged (for a WWI plane), and having excellent flight characteristics, the N.XX served from late 1917 until 1918. In February of 1918, a German pilot, Hermann Von Mondmann, took off from a half-frozen lake near the Western front. His wingman had to turn back due to engine troubles in the freezing conditions. After crossing into English skies, Hermann was spotted and engaged by a trio of Sopwith Camels and a single Sopwith Pup. After almost thirty minutes of intense dogfighting, the Hermann managed to shoot down the Pup and one of the Camels. One of the remaining two turned around after (Hermann recalls) seeing black smoke coming from its engine. The other Camel and Hermann dueled for another ten minutes, and soon both pilots were out of ammunition. Hermann's gunner, Ludwig, had been wounded earlier, and had at that point not been able to operate the gun. Hermann and the English pilot both pulled out their service revolvers and began firing at each other, to no avail. After several more minutes of angry shouting and taunts (none of which the other pilot could hear), both turned around to head home. However, Ludwig used the last of his strength to whip the gun around and fire a burst into the Camel's fuel tank, instantly igniting it. Hermann and Ludwig would both be awarded Iron Crosses for their bravery, and would both survive the war (Hermann would go on to co-found the Gunther-Schmitt Company).
