Grumman F-14C Tomcat
"I have a need. A need for speed."
-Tom Cruise, as Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Top Gun (1986)
(1) activates wing sweep. (2) activates glove vanes. (3-4, 7) discharges missiles. (5) releases drop tanks. VTOL + Down controls wing sweep. The F-14 Tomcat is an American naval interceptor designed by Grumman. One of the most powerful aircraft in the world at the time, it would serve well with the United States Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. In US Navy service, it would receive strike capabilities and seeing few aerial engagements aside from two incidents with the Libyan Air Force, retired them in 2006.
However, Iran would continue to use its F-14 fleet up until the time of this writing. There, it would see extensive action in the Iran-Iraq War between 1980-1989. It soon became the most feared aircraft in the sky, scoring about 150 aircraft kills to the 12 lost during the war, of which half were due to combat. It would serve as an interceptor and as an AWACS platform for less capable fighters.
In popular media, this aircraft was one of the stars in the movie Top Gun, featuring Tom Cruise.
This particular example is in fictional Paterian Air Force markings.
