Tengku Rizal Nurdin

Tengku Rizal Nurdin (February 21, 1948 – September 5, 2005) was the 13th Governor of North Sumatra, serving from 1998 until his death on September 5, 2005, while serving in his second term (2003–2008). Before becoming governor, he retired from his position as Commander of the I/Bukit Barisan Military Command in 1997 with the rank of Major General. Nurdin was elected Governor of North Sumatra on June 15, 1998. He was appointed Governor of North Sumatra for the second term on March 24, 2003, and was supposed to end on June 15, 2008.
Tengku Rizal Nurdin, who is of Malay and Minang blood, is the older brother of Tengku Erry Nuradi, the governor of North Sumatra for the 2016-2018 period.[1][2] From his marriage to Hj. N.R. Siti Maryam (born in 1948), Rizal had two daughters, namely T. Armilla Madiana and T. Arisma Mellina. In addition, Rizal Nurdin also served as the Chairperson of KONI North Sumatra.

He died in a Mandala Airlines plane crash on September 5, 2005 in Medan. At that time he was on his way to attend an emergency meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta that evening.[3]

Tengku Rizal Nurdin was awarded the Mahaputra Star by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on November 9, 2005 in connection with the commemoration of Heroes' Day on November 10, 2005 with Presidential Decree No. 083/TK/2005[4]
