About the locomotive
Wolfeboro 250 is a 2-6-2 Prairie type locomotive, built in 1926 for the WK&S railroad, in Mississippi. In the early 1970s, after the WK&S closed, 250 was introduced to the newly formed Wolfeboro Railroad, in New Hampshire. It would be the pride locomotive for the railroad, and was the second locomotive to arrive to the railroad.
The locomotive would serve the mainly tourist route as a passenger locomotive, and ran special trains (such as Christmas specials).
When the railroad was sold in 1977, W250 was the first locomotive to leave the railroad.
About the Wolfeboro Railroad
Originaly a branch owned by the Boston & Maine, the Wolfeboro railroad didn't become a company until a Pennsylvanian man offered to buy it. Prior to this, trains would stop at the Wolfeboro station, and could travel to the docks of Lake Winnipesaukee, where passengers could board the Mount Washington steam ship.
The first locomotive to arrive was a Plymouth ML-8, from the Strasburg railroad. It originally had been transferred to the area to serve as a power unit for a anniversary special, because the branch had reached 100 years of age. This locomotive was renumbered to 9.
The purchase to buy the railroad was on December 12, 1972, just 4 months after the anniversary.
Locomotive 250 was the next to arrive, followed by 5 passenger cars, a flatbed, and a snowplow. Also accompanying the railroad was a wooden motor car, which had originally been used as a smoking parlor car on a 3ft gauge railroad in New York. It was being leased from the Strasburg railroad.
The first year that the WRR opened saw 20,000 passengers, a great start. This was just the beginning, though. In 1976, the railroad purchased what is known as the "Central Division," which added 76 miles to the 12 mile railroad. Following this, the railroad seeked bigger diesel motive power, that being a RS-3 from Maine Central. However, the demand from this new route addition wasn't enough. They had expected 2,100 cars worth of cargo to be moved in the first year, but only 240 were done. This was the demise of the railroad.
In 1977, a ad on Wall Street offered the route for sale.
The hopes of repaying debt was on the railroad's mind. All the equipment was sold.
