(Alternate history up ahead)
During the German invasions of World War II, France realized it may quickly be running out of resources such as the 7.5mm machine guns used in many of their fighters. Thus, they experimented with alternate-armed aircraft, one of which involved converting a Backfire Mk.I fighter to use eight 8-gauge shotguns instead of its' usual 8 machine guns. Whilst the project never saw action as it was deemed too difficult to land a hit with the shotguns, the Mk.Is prototype did fly, and experienced few reliability problems from its' unusual armament.
