When this torpedo bomber was first made in 1935, it was the best in the world. Twice as fast as previous Torpedo bombers, The prototype, the XTBD, was named by US forces as the Devastator. 110 of these reliable workhorses were made by 1937, And they did their work well. Although they were outdated by the time pearl Harbor was bombed, they were still the primary torpedo bomber of the time. The Devastators were used heavily during the carrier raids of early '42, and they fought heroically during the Battle of the Coral sea. But their time swiftly came to an end during the Battle of Midway. 41 TBD Devastators, sent up without fighter cover, attacked the Japanese carriers off Midway Island. The planes were forced to fly low(60 ft) and slow (115 mph) due to the unreliable Mk 13 torpedo. The men were brave, dodging AA shells and attacks from A6M "Zero" fighters. Out of the 82 men who took to the skies in defense of their country, 69 were killed. The sacrifice of the pilots was not in vain: minutes later, SBD Dauntless dive bombers dived on the Japanese carriers and sank them.. this upload is a memorial to the men who died for their country. May god be with them all...
