Chinese were considering an AWACS version, most likely to replace the country's ingenious but outdated turboprop-modified Tupolev Tu-4 (read "reverse-engineered WWII Boeing B-29 bomber) AWACS planes. Maybe this was the original reason for building the plane, in which case the design would not have been that outdated after all! (Based on SyntheticL’s aircraft.)
