In 1953 G.91 project won a competition to create a new light fighter-bomber NATO. His rivals in the competition were Northrop F-5, Dassault Étendard, Sud-Est Baroudeur, Aerfer Sagittario iBreguet Taon. G.91 made its first flight August 9, 1956. The first was adopted in 1961, the Italian Air Force. In 1962, taken by the Air Force in Germany. A little later, he was accepted and the Portuguese Air Force. Greece and the United States are also considering the possibility of purchase of these aircraft, but the real deal, it never came. Before the reform in 1966, the US Army (when all the military aircraft were transferred to the Air Force), Army SShAplanirovala use this aircraft in local wars. The plane was made 17 years (the production was stopped in 1977), all built 770 planes, including licensed production in Germany (it was the first combat aircraft, purchased by Germany after World War II). The last aircraft was decommissioned in 1995.
