About the history of Boeing 727-100/200 RE/Re-engined Super 27

In 1988, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) published a paper titled The Valsan 727-200REA FAR part 36, stage 3, re-engining program. Published online in 2005 by the ASA, this publication gives us insight into how and why a 727 re-engining was undertaken.Speaking about the aircraft and its three PW JT8D bypass ratio turbofan engines, the publication says the following: [The 727-200s] contribute much of the noise annoyance around most of the world's airports because of the high level of jet exhaust noise produced during departures and because of the high frequency of operations by the large number of 727-200 airplanes that are in service. With this problem in mind, a firm by the name of Valsan Partners launched a program to remove the two fuselage mounted JT8D engines from the 727-200 and replace them with newer higher bypass ratio JT8D-200 Series engines fitted within new nacelles. The existing JT8D center engine would then be equipped with a "special internal nozzle...within a new acoustically treated tailpipe. The ASA reported that the re-engined 727-200RE would produce "significantly less noise" during departures and landings while also improving cruise fuel consumption. It added that noise certification tests demonstrated "compliance with the stage 3 noise level requirements of [Federal Aviation Regulations] part 36 as well as the chapter 3 requirements of ICAO Annex 16.
"We did an autopsy into why Valsan failed and basically we came up with 'terrible timing," said Robert Korn, a representative for Rohr. Although Valsan had orders and options for more than 200 aircraft, it only ever completed 23 conversions. On top of noise reductions that Valsan's changes achieved, the mid-1990s re-engining would also have similar improvements in fuel burn. Rohr claimed a 6-7% reduction in fuel consumption (for the -200) with an increase of at least 560km (300NM) in range.

Have a nice flight!

@muffinchip Of course, just credit the airplane's credit (auto-credit or in description) to GalacticaAsia and me, and credit the livery to yourself.
