History: After the initial success of the GS-12 Ausf.A, Günther-Schmitt decided to improve open that by creating the Ausf.D. The Ausf.B and Ausf.C only improved on tiny imperfections in the Ausf.A, so the Ausf.D was selected. It was faster, gave both crew members better visibility, and could carry a heavier payload. One problem it was plagued by however was that occasionally one of the three locks on the side hatch would pop open, but it didn't cause any crashes or structural failures, so Gunther-Schmitt decided not to fix it. From 1940-1942 over 6,000 GS-12 Ausf.D's were produced, with only around 45 lost in combat before the war ended.
