Caproni Ca.60
Thank you for the upvotes! After 1.7 years I am once again on the front page lol
"So the fruit of years of work, an aircraft that was to form the basis of future aviation, all is lost in a moment. But one must not be shocked if one wants to progress. The path of progress is strewn with suffering." - Giovanni Battista Caproni
This is actually my third time making this aicraft, I just never was quite satisfied with how it turned out. To be fair, this one isn't that good either, but right now it's 2 AM and I've been working on it for several hours so I'd say I'm done for now.
Flies surprisingly good. Spawn on water, let it accelerate, and rotate. Use trim to correct out any unwanted pitch.
This aircraft was pretty ahead of its time. While most airliners of the era could seat about a few dozen people, the Ca.60 was designed to fit a hundred passengers.
To build it, Caproni had to disassemble three heavy triplane bombers, which by themselves were considered enormous.
The aircraft flew twice. But while the first flight was a success, the second resulted in the aircraft's destruction.
The aircraft supposedly pitched up uncontrollably after taking off, stalled, and hit the water tail first. No one was harmed during the crash. After inspecting the wreck and concluding that there's no way to repair the aircraft, Caproni said the quote I mentioned at the beginning.
My educated guess would be that the centers of lift and mass were too close together and therefore any slight disturbance could cause the aircraft to overreact. I actually had the same problems when building this in SP, today's aircraft can afford it because even a basic fly-by-wire system can take care of these issues.
