Best to not let the speed drop off. Decrease the attitude once the speed starts to get below 500 before releasing. Real space shuttles didn't exit the atmosphere at a 90degree angle, they went a lot shallower. Seems to be okay if the speeds kept high but once it starts to spin is near impossible to recover, makes a good challenge though!
