@kukimuki1234 We're trying to cut back on featuring planes as people were complaining they weren't getting enough exposure... In one extreme case, a plane was only featured for something like 2 hours. It was pretty bad, so we're trying to be less trigger happy.

  • A guide on how to be nice 8.4 years ago

    @jw1523 correct. XD

  • THE REALIZATION 8.4 years ago

@EternalDarkness I am moderating... Besides, I've already done the daily requirement of moderating. And I'm just being realistic. I mean if @AviownCorp has a pot of money floating about, then go for it, it would be great to see them do achieve that, but I'm just saying that if you want to make a living out of it, drones are the way to go.

  • de Havilland Comet DH.88 8.4 years ago

@kukimuki1234 why not? I believe it meets the requirements of a plane that deserves to be featured. It's by a silver ranked user and has a simple but atheistically appealing design. Now I personally didn't feature the aircraft, but I do not feel inclined to go against the decision of the one that featured it. I know you probably think it's not detailed enough and too simple, but this game is called simpleplanes.... I think sometimes people need to be reminded of that and that you don't have to make something overly complicated, like I did, in order to get on there.
    .
Now I respect that after reading that you probably still don't agree with the fact this plane was featured. After all it's your opinion and your entitled to that. But, you are not entitled to put people down for it publicly in full view of the user. If it was constructed criticism, fair enough... But it isn't, it's just flat out hating.

  • de Havilland Comet DH.88 8.4 years ago

@Djbanana no problem. Just doing my job XD

  • de Havilland Comet DH.88 8.4 years ago

@Djbanana it's alright. It's not anything full blown, just thought I'd warn you before it was.

  • Goodbye friend. 8.4 years ago

@Areonautics3 He broke the rules by retaliating with spam, yes.

  • de Havilland Comet DH.88 8.4 years ago

@kukimuki1234 Please don't harass other players. If you think a plane doesn't deserve to be featured, take it up with the mods or devs, rather than taking matters into your own hands.
    .
Also, @CaesiciusPlanes @Djbanana I hope this isn't about to unfold into a fully fledged argument. Considering you've both committed rule violations within the last day or so, I think it would be wise to not engage in such matters.

  • THE REALIZATION 8.4 years ago

@EternalDarkness Average salary has nothing to do with it. If said person had saved up or was earning higher than average, that neglects your point altogether, also the very fact that they presumably were able to afford to get it certified further enforces my previous point... In fact the very idea that they are flying at all further proves my previous point, unless it's insanely cheap to do all the latter, in which case your points are void unless it's taking place in the same country. Also, would they be able to fly such an aircraft in international airspace? Moreover, was it a proper plane or microlight/paraglider?
    .
I mean fair enough, if the OP wants to be making microlights, etc, then I've clearly got the wrong end of the stick, but I was under the impression we were talking about fixed wing aircraft.

  • THE REALIZATION 8.4 years ago

@EternalDarkness Key words were "where possible". I think anyone with a bit of practical know-how can tell you that riveting a tube is a bit impractical. I was more referencing skin panels, stringers, ribs, etc. Again, the cost of materials would be quite a lot. Factor in flight instruments too and that brings the cost up even more. If you have that kind of money to throw away, the by all means get out and do it. It would be a practical and useful experience, but like I say, I can't see a person that's quitting a computer game based on a lack of funds amounting to much, unless they're planning on taking out a large loan and happen to know specialists regarding all the things previously mentioned. Obviously there's the certification tests as well that would need to be taken into account.
    .
Small drones on the other hand would be more affordable. Having looked into building one as a university team project, I can conform that the costs for ducted fans, servos, transmitters, receivers and materials don't amount to much in the grand scheme of things. Obviously, you'd have to look into motor kv's, fan sizes, battery types, etc in order to make something that works, but other than that, it would require less effort and money overall in comparison to making a full blow manned aircraft.

  • THE REALIZATION 8.4 years ago

@EternalDarkness True. However, it is generally considered better work practice if you use rivets where possible. Having done riveting myself, it can be hard to get it to the right standard. Now while I'm sure you can get specialist welder at your local bike shop, but I think you'd be struggling a bit more to find a specialist with the right pneumatic tools for riveting, and I'm not talking pop rivets... They're generally looked down upon in the aviation industry.
    .
Also, if your making an ultralight aircraft, to conform with FAI standards, it needs to be lighter than 450kg (two seater). Now unless your making something out of canvas, that kind of weight would be hard to achieve without the use of composite materials such as fibreglass and carbon fibre. Again, making moulds for such things and layering the fibreglass with the right amount/mixture of resign can be difficult if you've never done anything like that before.
    .
With all that in mind, I think it would be safe to say that it is likely to be an expensive project to do by yourself let alone with the help of specialists. And for someone who's quitting a game on planes because of a lack of funds, I somewhat doubt they're going to be able to afford all that. But, I digress.

  • Goodbye friend. 8.4 years ago

@Areonautics3 In this instance it would appear that you are in the wrong... However, @Djbanana you are just as bad for retaliating like you did instead of involving a moderator. Should a similar situation come up again, please tag me or another moderator.

  • THE REALIZATION 8.4 years ago

@EternalDarkness welding aluminium is very hard to do. You have to be really skilled to do it as, unlike with steel, the temperatures, etc are very precise. In fact welding in itself is pretty skilled, aviation standard welding even more so. I'm not sure your average Joe would be able to do such things overnight. Moreover, I can't see him making a profitable business from making ultralight aircraft... Esspecially when you consider the number of standards you have to adhere to when making and selling aircraft.
    .
I think manufacturing of drones in this day and age would be easier and because it's an expanding industry, you're more likely to get a foothold, especially with the smaller ones. I imagine materials and components would be a lot cheaper too.

Nice aircraft! Love the swing wings most probably. Not many planes on the site really have them that work well like yours do (achieve roughly level flight at normal and swept angles).

  • Red Venom 8.4 years ago

@SteadfastContracting Also, I'm 99% certain it survived a hit by an interceptor. The missile exploded, but the plane was still intact. What kind of sorcery is this?

  • Red Venom 8.4 years ago

What kind of missiles are those?! I was in a dogfight with an improved ES-46, I locked on missed, then yours locked on and despite the distance it hit me within about half a second. Was literally sat there like: "what on earth was that!?"

  • What is power-to-weight ratio?? 8.4 years ago

    @Ephwurd No problem!

  • What is power-to-weight ratio?? 8.4 years ago

@Ephwurd Power to weight ratio is a planes aircraft's power with reference to its weight. For example if a plane weighted 50,000 pounds and had engines that produced 25,000 pounds of thrust, then the plane would produce a ratio of 0.5.
    .
While it can help determine a top speed of an aircraft, it is by no means a direct reference, as speed depends on a number of factors such as altitude, drag, etc. However, it does play a large factor in flight performance. An aircraft with a thrust to weight ratio higher that 1 will allow the aircraft to take off or climb vertically with little to no problem. Hence why VTOL aircraft have a thrust to weight ratio higher than 1.
    .
An example to all the above, the Harrier (VTOL Plane) has a ratio of 1.1, but struggles to break the sound barrier. By Contrast the F-111 has a thrust to weight ratio of 0.91 but had the ability to travel at mach 2.5. Obviously Mach speed is a variable dependent on altitude, etc, but those numbers are generally taken at an international standard.
