Put some pylons on the wings (find them in the Wings tab) and you can put landing gear on them. Probably would be good to put 1 on each wing and a tail wheel. One thing about VTOL's is to make it easy to fly vertically, your CoT must be directly inside of the CoM. (At least in my experience) Good luck!
If the controls are too sensetive you should try making the control surfaces much smaller. Generally speaking smaller control surfaces means less control, so if it's touchy that's your fix.
Not sure the point of directly copying my design, but whatever dude, you do you.
If you get it flying it can manage up to 300mph. Beyond that it exploded on me and sent the cockpit flying away at roughly 20,000mph. Quite fun.
Not the heaviest, I've seen 50k lb planes fly.

20mm or larger cannon would be fun. :)
So it self destructs on command? Lol awesome. You should mess with rotors making parts go inside eachother, causes some nice explosions!
Stickmeet, you basically have to go full throttle and keep on pulling up as hard as you can, it just barely goes up after the end of the runway! lol
Rough, as you said, but quite nice! You got the basic shape down. Maybe this would help you? http://img.wp.scn.ru/camms/ar/571/pics/3_169.jpg :)
You might want to try making it on a slightly larger scale. Generally speaking planes of this scale are hard to get to work correctly.
