Preface

"What is AI ASAP?"

"AI ASAP is my project that aims for simple low part recreation of any aircrafts i have in mind, they are to adhere to UDR Conduct and to have an equal ground against each other without Bias involved, all of their flight models are to be Arcade-ish and for their speed to be standardized to the same so that they can engage each other without one over the other." - Tsuchiisan (now Farewellchii).

Definition of the AI ASAP is a simple, minimalist, and low part recreation of any aircraft that will act like the AI plane for your SimplePlanes world. This idea was firstly developed by one of my pal in SimplePlanes, Tsuchiisan, which is now he has becoming my fallen soldier after he is abandoning us all. After his leaving, i was decided to making my own AI ASAP in order to continueing his legacy and keeping up his original content still running and alive, and right this time, i am trying to develop more better and ever.

Tsuchiisan's original content was called as Project ASAP, which is consisting of (links are clickable) Target ASAP Ships, AI ASAP Arcade Fighters, which is our main topic, and lastly Target ASAP Airships. From that all i was inspired and decided to continue his legacy by currently making a proposal of my new next content, which is inspired from him.

Based and inspired from the AI ASAP Arcade Fighters which is Tsuchiisan creates some working AI fighter jets, here i am making my own working AI ASAP resembly to rotorcraft such as helicopters. This text link that i placed right here was the first debut of my AI ASAP (clickable link). Actually, this project was meant to be discontinued, but now, my heart and intentions are driven to continue this project so that this project is alive and still running. There is some of them which is i converted from an existing creation, and some of them again were created by own efforts by using some blueprints.

I'm Wolfy, aka WolfHunter9111 and today, i present to you the manual guide of how to use and operates my AI Rotorcrafts for your Simpleplanes world.

Overview

Helicopter is a type of rotorcraft in which lift and thrust are supplied by horizontally spinning rotors. This allows the helicopter to take off and land vertically, to hover, and to fly forward, backward and laterally. These attributes allow helicopters to be used in congested or isolated areas where fixed-wing aircraft and many forms of STOL (Short TakeOff and Landing) or STOVL (Short TakeOff and Vertical Landing) aircraft cannot perform without runway.

Introduction

Wolfy here and i would like to bring you, the AI Rotorcraft ASAP collection. Where you can have many choice of AI helicopters to be added to your world. Use them as a decoration for your world, target practice, roleplaying, or a hostile enemy. There are lot of different types from the passive, unarmed cargo helicopters until the dangerous, attack helicopter gunships.

All of these builds were less than 100 parts, and some of them were made by existing creations from others (AI Conversion), and another is made by myself.

Types of rotorcrafts.

There are many types of rotorcrafts, start from unarmed and passive transport helicopters, until the dangerous attack helicopter gunships. Each types has different behaviour. List of the types of rotorcrafts are mentioned down below:

  • Transport -
The transport helicopter is a helicopter type proposed to transport personnel or cargo. They are mainly passive and unarmed.

  • Tiltrotor -
A tiltrotor is a rotorcraft which generates lift and propulsion by way of one or more powered rotors mounted on rotating shafts or nacelles usually at the ends of a fixed wing.

  • Amphibious -
An amphibious helicopter is a helicopter that is intended to land on and take off from both land and water. Amphibious helicopters are used for a variety of specialized purposes including air-sea rescue, marine salvage and oceanography, in addition to other tasks that can be accomplished with any non-amphibious helicopter. There are also different types, some are passive and some are aggressive.

  • Attack helicopter -
The attack helicopter is a helicopter type that was intended for combat. Mostly designed for military service. They are armed and they can turn aggressive if you bother them.

  • Gunship -
A gunship helicopter is a multipurpose variant that intended and designed for both combat and transport capable. Same as attack helicopters, they're turned aggressive if disturbed.

You can see the full list of my rotorcrafts collections from each types, click here to jump to the main forum.

Installation and Launch

You will need SimplePlanes game installed to your devices to install this AI Rotorcrafts. Keep on mind that this is not a mod or plugin or whatever. Literally this is same as any aircrafts creations that you can find on Simpleplanes website, so the installment should be easy to do.

After downloading some of the AI Rotorcrafts from my page, simply open the download file and you will be get into your SimplePlanes game, save the aircraft and then you'll have it. You can rename the crafts.

This is all are working for all devices with SimplePlanes avaliable on it (either mobile or PC they are same).

Just simply click the download button and then open the file.

Starting up

After you are in the game, it's time to spawn them. I would like to say that this all are intended for AI and you are not supposed to fly or control it. Even the control are kinda weird for you because it's actually was made not for players.

To spawn them, open the Pause Menu and then open the Spawn Menu (marked at red circle).

After that, select your spawn location first, after that, find your AI Rotorcraft with the name you saved it, then click it.

After the pop-up message appears, click "Spawn".

And there you go, you are now have your AI Rotorcraft spawned in your world.

Please keep on mind

You are not supposed to fly this. This builds are intended to be programmed to be flew by AI, either to wander around your world, making it as target practice, or spawn it as a hostile enemy.

How does it work?

The AI Rotorcrafts was made by funky trees gyroscope and modified airplane propellers. Gyroscope was made for their movement system, and the airplane propellers are made for their rotorblades.

The systematics of the AI Rotorcraft (red outline: funky trees-modified custom gyroscope, and blue outline: modified airplane propellers)

Why don't use default helicopter blades?

I prefer the propellers instead of rotorblades to give the blade blurry effect, which is this features aren't avaliable on default helicopter blade.

Comparison of the rotorcraft, the left one is using the default heli rotor and the right one is using the modified airplane propeller. Notice the blur effect on the one with modified airplane propeller as it's blades. The blur effect gives a realism and better view into the AI rotorcraft, which is shows that the rotorblades is spinning.

Picture of real life helicopter with it's rotorblade spinning. Notice that it's looks blurry when it's spinning.

But i thought we can edit the rotorblade collective pitch so that it doesn't need VTOL anymore, yes... AI actually cannot operates VTOL and action groups. I know as well that we can edit the rotorblade collective pitch to not using VTOL anymore, but still, plane propellers as helicopter blades give a blurry effect to it's rotorblades.

Systematics and demonstrations

Let's jump about the systematics. The modified airplane propellers will be act like a helicopter rotor that will throttle up and push the helicopter upward.

Demonstration:

Another systematics featured in the AI is the gyroscope. The gyroscope installed on the helicopter to balance the helicopter and provides the control system. The pitch are made inverted to make the helicopter flies forward.

Why do the pitch inverted?

As i told you before, you're not supposed to fly this thing. This rotorcraft was programmed for the AI.
Reason why the pitch control is inverted because to make the AI can move forward. Not invert the pitch control resulting in the AI flies backwards.

Demonstration

Left: with the inverted pitch, and the right: with non-inverted pitch.

The tiltrotor type rotorcraft has it's own special ability. It's equipped with a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) system, like an Osprey.

How does it works?
Since the AI plane cannot operates VTOL, the system was modified with a little bit touch of funky trees, which is the control input was set into the Landing Gear. Once the AI reached the certain height of take-off, the AI will retract it's Landing Gear, the tiltrotor will rotate down and make the tiltrotor flies forward with it's VTOL down.

Demonstration

The rotors are act like a landing gear. So when the aircraft reach it's takeoff height, the AI will retract it's landing gear, and automatically the rotor will goes VTOL as well.

Other systematics are the Weapon Bay. The AI rotorcraft with weapon bay can be seen at the RAH-66 Comanche. The AI will open it's weapon bay when they're aiming at you, or when they're spot their enemy while on the aggressive mode. If there is no hostiles around, the missile bay will remains closed.

Demonstration

Left: when there is no enemy nearby, and right: when it's locking on enemy. It will closed again when there are no more enemies to track.

The Amphibious type helicopter has an special ability to float in the water. Which is mean they can be spawned, and even landing on any kind of water surface, due to it's been equipped with floaters or buoyancy thing (pontoon).

The Mi-14, is one of the example of an amphibious helicopter.

Behaviour

Things that you should know next is the behaviour. Each types has it's own behaviour. For example the unarmed transport helicopters are mainly passive and harmless, they will never attack you and always fleeing away when you bother them, as well as the tiltrotors. The attack or gunship helicopters are neutral, they're will not attack you unless you bother them by locking them with your missile, or when you spawn them in Aggressive mode. The amphibious choppers has two behaviours, some of them may be harmless and some of the others may be dangerous. The armed amphibious choppers are also categorized as gunship, although they're will not be listed in gunship list.

A transport helicopter like CH-47 are mainly passive and not dangerous because they're not equipped with any combat armaments.

An attack helicopter as an example the AH-64 are armed and can be dangerous if disturbed, or spawned as aggressive.

Armed helicopters

The armed helicopters has three types:

  • Attack helicopter.
  • Gunship helicopter.
  • Amphibious helicopter (if it's armed).

The attack helicopter is a helicopter type that was intended for combat. Mostly designed for military service. And a gunship helicopter is a multipurpose variant that intended and designed for both combat and transport capable.

An AH-1W and the AH-64D are the two examples of attack helicopters.

A Mi-24D and the CH-53 are the two examples of gunship helicopters. Quick trivia that in reality, the CH-53 was never being to be a gunship.

Armed helicopters are classified as neutral, they will not attack you unless when you disturb them.

Bothering the armed helicopters cause them all to fight you back.

I know you don't really want to ended up like this.

if you are smart enough, strike back at them all.

The armed helicopters are equipped with machine guns and custom Guardian missile, which is can directly hit at you when you are inside their targetting radius. Their max targetting angle are 45 degrees.

The armed helicopters also have secondary custom gyroscope installed inside them. it allows them to track and aims at you. It was funky-trees modified, the secondary gyroscope features an automatic tracking system that will aim at you and also following your movement.

Two gyroscopes layered together. One is the main control, and the other is the tracking system.

Spawning

Spawn on default mode to spawn them in normal mode. For the armed helicopters, they're neutral until you bother them all, they're turn aggressive against you.

Spawn on aggressive mode to spawn them in combat mode. It only works at armed helicopters. The unarmed choppers will flee away instead of fight back.

ATTENCION! Please keep on mind!

  • It also depend on your spawning area. Recommended to spawn them in wide open area, or in "Default" location. Spawning them in not open area (example: place full of high mountains or cliffs) may be a chance to cause the AI to crash into a cliff or other obstacle.

  • For the armed helicopters, do not spawn them while on aggressive mode in the ground. It would cause them to track at you and shoot their missile. That because their missile. When they're firing their missile before they're reached enough height, the missile will launched and descend down, making the missile to impact the ground and cause a massive explosion to the helicopter. It's highly recommended to spawn aggressive armed helicopters on the air instead.

Known issues: Attack helicopters blows-up when spawned in the ground. Do not spawn them on aggressive mode in the ground, spawn them on default mode and then bother them to make them hostile. Or you can spawn aggressive helicopters in the air, it's highly recommended.

Here i demonstrate how could the self-destruct happend.

Basically the aggressive armed helicopters will track and fire a missile at you. Once it's missile launched, instead the missile approaching you, this is what actually happened.

The missile are marked with red circle. Red curvy arrow shows the missile launch direction, and the blue straight arrows shows the direction where the missile will go. The missile always going straight down.

The missile impact marked with red circle. Red arrows shows how the explosion spreads, and the blue half-circle shows the radius of the explosion impact. As you can see it's indirecty impacting the helicopter as well.

The massive explosion of the helicopter self-destruct caused by the helicopter payload.

  • Tiltrotors are same as armed helicopters that you should not spawn tiltrotor while on aggressive mode in the ground too. It will cause them to retract their landing gear as well as their VTOL goes down. Instead of flying, or self-destruct just like previous, it just break their own propellers and make them unable to fly and remains stuck in the ground. If you want to spawn a hostile tiltrotors, better spawn them in the air instead. And literally what is the point to spawn an aggressive tiltrotors if they are unarmed and passive? They're fleeing away instead of fight back if disturbed.

That was happend when you trying to spawn a tiltrotor on aggressive mode while on the ground.

  • It's highly recommended to spawn an "aggressive" armed amphibious helicopters in dry area. Do not spawn them on water or any wet place. I know amphibious helicopters can land on water, but it seems like not for the armed variants. Because when you spawn an aggressive amphibious armed helicopter in the water, their missile will not working properly and they cannot attack you. Because the game will consider that the missile is wet and has water in it. Instead of launching, the missile is just slowly falling down like feather.

This is what actually happend to the AI amphibious armed helicopter when you spawn them in the water area. Their missile was launched, but it just slowly falling down like a feather instead of hitting it's target.

  • This AI was not meant to be controlled by yourself, you are not supposed to fly or control this. Weird controls like inverted pitch, auto-aim, and others, are the systematics for the AI themself.

Well done!

You have been learned everything about Wolfy's AI Rotorcraft ASAP Collection. Now you know anything about what have you learned and understood from right? It's time to try it by yourself.

@WolfHunter9111 It's XML, and it probably predate the introduction of FT, or was at least introduced alongside the earliest FT codes. First seen on someone's sub-launched guided torpedoes. Forgot whom (IIRC one of the submarine challenges a few years back), but the knowledge stayed with me in the form of my own missiles.

@ThomasRoderick huh? Is any kind of sort of funky trees code that can make the missiles waterproof?
