Every other website calls this "mentioning" or "pinging" a user, why do we call it tagging, especially when there is a completely unrelated tag system for posts?
Does everyone do this because "everyone else does it"? How did we get here in the first place?

Its called tagging on Facebook.
Some user probably saw it on Facebook, liked the idea, started using it their teasers and soon everyone else used tagging.
Not sure how it started.
All I know is that I call it that because that's how everyone else calls it, and they likely picked it up the same way.
