What damage model for guns to be their real life equivalent?

25.5k Mustang51  1.8 years ago

Hey guys,

I know that the base damage and impact from the wing guns is 30 damage and 10 impact force (or at least it used to be) and was wondering what i would have to lower it down for .30 calibre, .50 calibre, average WW2 20mm, and modern 20mm would be. If anyone has figured this out already, please do let me know! If you already know for other calibres, please also do share.

Thanks!

A great video about Gun damage and effectiveness from WWII. Lots of real data. It might help you determine if a model is accurate.

@Mustang51 my tanks use increased HP using the overload mod and angling them allows shells to be deflected, as my friend @BismuthTheKLAVpilot discovered

@Novaxomix yeah exactly. Would be cool if you could add armour to fuselage blocks and that would increase the weight for tanks too

@Mustang51 i see your point, there is no real proprtion of damage in this game, shells can ad have ricocheted off of my tank builds before, and they seem to do less damage when they do, and there is no realistic way to make damage realistic dueto almost all parts having a default of 100 HP

@Dathcha welp. Time to make a machine gun that fires missiles then

@Novaxomix I’d say you’re probably not. The number 30 is just an arbitrary score they gave. A plane doesn’t explode after just a couple rounds of .50 going through a non-essential part of the fuselage or wing, especially with no fuel in it. The consensus seems to be that .50 damage is around 5 damage points in this game. In real life, it could take dozens or even hundreds of .303 rounds to shoot down a small to medium size enemy aircraft and .303 has similar ballistic capabilities to .308 in terms of velocity and energy. The 30 damage seems to be more similar to 20mm Hispano. There is also a calculation which many have done to make realistic gun damage models and depending on who you ask, the damage for a .50 should be between 4-10

@Novaxomix I think a .50 cal does something like 5 damage and these do 30. They’re way stronger

really neat forum by weaverfish which has a section on gun damage
anyway, the damage variable for guns is more of a suggestion—if you hit a 100 health fuselage with a gun of 25 damage it may not always take exactly 4 shots.

impact force is kinda something else, i wouldnt go above 5. if you have a rapid-firing gun with impactForce=10, (like the stock gun) your target is going to shake wayyy too much. you generally want enough that you can kinda feel that you're being shot, but not too much that it changes your flight path outright

Didn't test it yet but maybe it's what you're looking for:

    damage & impactForce

    For xmm guns, multiply x by 2. (i.e. 20mm means damage=40 and impactForce=40)
