Is the new flak too deadly?

32.4k TheAceOwl  7.1 years ago

Ive been testing the new destroyer mission out and it seems like one hit from flak and your whole plane is screwed. Maybe itll damage some parts but for the most part a direct hit will cause your plane to fall apart.

@Greatsuperfatman ive flown for ten miles over the fleet without getting hit. Then get hit as soon as i fly straight. It veries.

@TheOwlAce now is it possible to outspeed them?
without or with mods? because going slow might be tooo slow.

@Greatsuperfatman each fletcher has 6x 127mm guns that in reality could fire 15rpm. So thats 90 rounds a minute focussed on you. After testing it seems they always fire 20-80m in the direction youre flying, then home it in as you fly straight. With minimal movement, you can make them miss every shot.

@Scottydoestuff altho that may be the case. it seems like the flak shoots a lot faster then that. and I don't think theres any anti aircraft guns that fire fast that are over 88mm

(edit) seems like the fletcher had more then just those main guns. had several anti aircraft guns from 20-40mm

Not so fast boi. The destroyers seem to be based off the fletcher class destroyer, whose 5 main guns were over 88mm and could be used for anti aircraft and attacking surface threats.

Flak can Split a Airplane in half, no matter the size.

Sense its the destroyer mission, it might be the 88mm flak. that thing has a reload of 5 seconds irl.

and taking a 88mm shell to a plane, oooof

Well medium flak can cause some mild damage, specially if it's a direct hit

@CoolPeach Its medium flak with a 5in gun. @temporaryaccount The plane I was use was a super massive bomber with eight engines yet one hit takes it out. https://www.simpleplanes.com/a/Rbn5UY/FW-323-E-2

Damage like that depends on whether it was heavy flak, medium flak or light flak @temporaryaccount

I just want the damage to not be as deadly and to tear more parts off than blow the whole thing up.

Move quickly (at 500mph) or go far. Throw some evasive maneuvers in there, too.

just make an overbuilt plane with as much fuselage cover as possible, like a flying tank.

You see, that's why you make a tiny plane with all the parts XML'ed to 9000000000000000000000 health.

The one thing I have noticed is that if you change altitude or heading it takes time to the flak to readjust just like real Anti Aircraft guns. That will increase the chance of survivability.

Well, to be honest, flak shells are about 40-90mm, explosive or not, you should expect to get one-tapped by AA. The good thing about it is that it's quite inaccurate when you're far away. The bad thing is when it hits, it's relatively close to your cockpit so if you stay flying straight for a while it will have a guaranteed hit on your cockpit, detaching everything around it. @EternalDarkness @Botfinder @Tully2001

@Tully2001 flaks (anti aircraft guns) use timed fuse. Shell blows up at a certain distance from the gun. That was made possible when AA batteries started using radar to determine the distance to the target. So, small explosions are realistic, and so is the fact that you get splash damage (shrapnel) and get blown up if it hits you directly.

I've flown through it many times, and had no problems, even in slower planes. I try to make sure none of my outer surfaces contain fuel, because that is explosive.

@PilotOfFuture Id rather see alot of small hits that takes pieces out of the plane then the whole thing blowing up from one shell. @Awsomur the destroyer is a late US varient with radar guided 5 in guns and what looks like 40mms to the rear.

As far as i know its rather not deadly enough. A plane gets destroyed by such an explosion, similar to about half a missile

So basically flak just means any anti-aircraft cannon. I’m starting to think the flaks in SimplePlanes are small explosives. @TheOwlAce

That’s true. Give me a minute to reasearch flak, maybe I can devise a defense against it. @TheOwlAce

@Awsomur Even with no bombs it still destroys the plane in one hit.
