Realistic Bomb Release and Dispersion

18.8k F104Deathtrap  6.6 years ago

Anyone who's used the Boom-25 and Boom-50 knows that they are far from easy. Accuracy depends on using careful divebombing tactics or (for the case of heavy bombers) flying perfectly level at the exact altitude and speed prescribed by the bombsight. In the latter case, lining up your target becomes quite a task.

But what happens when it's time for "bombs away?" Well, that comes in two flavors. Either you drop all of them at once, and they fall together in an unrealistically tight-knit clump or you sloooooooowly release them one at a time. The "clump" method is great for accurate dive-bombing, especially against a single, large target like a ship. The "one at a time" approach is theoretically similar to carpet bombing, but if your plane is faster than 200mph (which it always is) then the bombs will be too far apart to reliably hit convoys (or anything).

So here's the important bit.

How do we fix this? Is there a way to make the bombs drift apart as they fall? Is there a way to give each bomb a slightly different split-second release delay so that they fall like this?

We need explosion delay for bombs so they can dig in the ground then explode

@DaModder01 You've got the right attitude. This game can be so confusing and helpful people like yourself are really what keeps this place going.

@DaModder01 Yes. I made this post 2 years ago before I learned about overload and fine tuner.

Install the Overload mod. Then create a line of bombs and use the mod by selecting them and clicking the added button. Click on the bar at the top that says "parts" and then scroll down and click the last bar that only has ap lus on it and type in firingDelay and awt the value to 0.5.

@Mostly I was considering something like that. Attaching a single, small wing hidden inside each bomb offset at slightly different angles could create a realistic WW2 bomb pattern.

Well, there are no working fins on default bombs, so you need to make custom ones for them to fall like that.

And add detach force to the bombs, and slightly angle the pylons/detachers

Yeah it is firingDelay you just type in the delay in seconds and it works

@Strikefighter04 That works for booms? I always thought that was just for "ze meesiles."
