My Next Project (Community help needed)

I'm now working on the Alekseyev I-217 jet interceptor with a unique wing design combined with heavy offensive armament.

The armament will consist of large-caliber cannons, although I can't decide which combination to implement.

Option 1:

  • 3x 37mm N-37 cannons

Option 2:

  • 2x 37mm N-37 cannons
  • 1x 57mm N-57 cannon (Keep in mind that this cannon fires slowly with a 0.6 second shell delay, but does twice the damage of the stock wing gun.)

Option 3:

  • 1x 37mm N-37 cannon
  • 2x 57mm N-57 cannons

Option 4:

  • 3x 57mm N-57 cannons

Option 5:

  • 2x 37mm cannons
  • 2x 57mm cannons

Just in case you guys want to know what the guns look like, here are some pictures.

37mm N-37

57mm N-57

    @AircraftoftheRedStar Yeah, that sounds cool.

I’m also thinking historically about how the guns would fit in different the locations. Because the wing is way to thin to house a gun caliber higher than 24mm, Unless bulky gun pods are placed below them which would interrupt the main landing gear (they fold into the fuselage) An N-57 right in front of the cockpit would protrude into the cockpit controls. There is plenty of room in the lower fuselage because the cockpit doesn’t go all the way through the nose. What the placement of Option 5 would be is two N-57s in the bottom of the nose more towards the outside (to make room for the nose gear) and above these are the two 37mm N-37s closer to the center of the nose.

Sorry for the paragraph size. Does it make sense? @ForeverPie

I'm attracted to a different idea. 4 37mm N-37s (two on each wing), with one 57mm N-57 on the top of the nose (right in front of the cockpit).

@AircraftoftheRedStar Same here. I try to make my planes realistic up to a point, but there are a lot of cool planes that never saw mass production for very good reasons.

I’ve done that with multiple planes. And I enjoy that feature tremendously. @F104Deathtrap

@AircraftoftheRedStar As long as you keep the blue behind the red, you'll be good to go. That's one of the nice things about Simple Planes, sometimes you can make them fly better than the real thing. :)

I think I’ll go with Option 5 as the definitive one and link the different options in the post like you said. @Mostly

I can help make all five different versions. You can choose to post one publicly and post the other four unlisted and linked in the description of the public post.

Ask why on earth he designed such an outrageous design then. :/ I'll test it and try to make a solution. It was designed to intercept bombers, so dog fights are not on the list @F104Deathtrap

@AircraftoftheRedStar Maybe, but for high caliber, slow firing guns you're going to want stability. With forward swept wings you'd have problems at trans sonic speeds, but more importantly you'd have an inherantly unstable plane. You'd be lucky to get it to fly at all without computer assistence, much less line up a shot effectively.

Exactly. Same concept as the Junkers Ju-287 @F104Deathtrap
