Dev question: Viruses on SP website

2,034 Resource  5.9 years ago

I have a friend of mine who thinks that the SP website is shady and sketchy and I wanted to ask about that, is there ways for users to put viruses on builds and mods?

Only in clickable links in forums. Dont click links in forums, unless you know who they are by. And if they are add or spam links, they could hack your account. Otherwise, it is perfectly safe.

@WNP78 @EternalDarkness good to hear, I've always been a tad apprehensive about downloading mods, but I'm glad the moderators are serious about it, there are some sites (minecraft mods cough) that don't care😂

@DemonSniper8 true that. And user posting it would be immediately permanently banned.

@DemonSniper8 though there is no rule against it as far as I know but, if a mod was shown to be malicious, at the very least it would be taken down (unsure, but this could even be a legal responsibility) and actions may be taken (conjecture) against the uploader if they are known.

@EternalDarkness I mean, mods aren't officially checked by staff, but if a moderator downloaded a mod and it had a virus, I assume the mod would be removed, right?

Moderator here. @WNP78 is 100% right. Builds cannot contain any malvare. Mods are not checked by the staff, and, as the in-game disclaimer says, Jundroo is not responsible for damage done by mods. We haven't had any malicious mods here, though. All currently available ones are safe.

There's no way a build could have malware, the worst it can do is crash the game by being too big for your device to handle, et cetera, at which point the game would probably crash and revert. Mods however, can run code on your system, so treat downloading mods with the same care you take when installing software - it's the same premise.

No. I mean, mods can have viruses but I've downloaded tons of them and it's never happened.

Only on mods made by sketchy users. Good clean mod makers include but not the only. HellfireCoder, Gesture, Tully.
As far as the downloading of planes. The game simpleplanes includes parts that have there own set of code. All you get when downloading a plane is that set of code that constructs the build for you. And it is secure because the only way to upload is ingame. And because sp is a game on the App Store and because the developers are credible professional video game makers. There is no history of the airplane download button being rigged. The only thing is to check the part count. A typical phone can take 400-1,500 parts. Some trolls post seemingly low part stuff that may be 10,000 parts. If downloaded by accident, the game may crash and upon re entering the app you will get notified with a pop up saying do you want to keep this build or remove it. If you choose to keep, it goes to a backup file. If you choose the other, It gets deleted. No mater what you choose in this scenario your phone will be safe. That scenario that I just explained is the only I repeat ONLY type of trolling that can be done if you download a plane. And it poses no risk at all and is harmless humor. This happened rarely (every 2 months or so a build like this gets posted. And people immediately call them out). Another thing you’re friend might be concerned on is online bullying. I have used sp. for well over 2 years. I have never found a case of bullying. PERIOD. People may be a little mean at times but moderators are strict on anti bullying. And any real bullying will very easily result in a band or permanent ban(talk to moderators because this is not my field). There is one real risk. And that’s clicking links in peoples forum posts and comments. They are visible because they are in normal font (NOT THE BOLDED LARGE FONT. This font, also in blue is not a link and is just used to make text more noticeable. It is a favorite for many gold and platinum users.) but the links may be possibly dangerous. I though click loads of these links on a daily basis and have never found anything dangerous. Nor have I ever heard of anyone clicking on a dangerous link EVER. And if there was. Well, SimplePlanes is a very interconnected and highly vocal community that will spot it. Post in forums warning people about it. Then they would comment on the users post containing the link to remove it. And VERY VERY shortly after a moderator will remove the link and probably ban the user. But dangerou

With mods yes, but I have downloaded a lot of mods, and so far none of them have viruses of malware. But with builds, no, as they are built in-game.

It is possible to do it with mods due to the nature of mods, executing code to change the game, but generally speaking everything currently on the website is virus/malware-free.
