Background

Federation

The Nagato-class is a class of Nuclear-powered Guided Missile Battlecruisers of the Royal Iridium Federation Navy, and is one of the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships in operation in the world. Among modern warships, they are second in size only to large aircraft carriers.

The Nagato-class's main weapons are 48x (96x Full Load) RGM-77(G) Longinus missiles mounted in deck, designed to engage large surface targets. Air defense is provided by 36x Trial II VLS with quad pack capability for SM-6. Torus VLS with 40 missiles mounted optionally in the bow. Nagato had twelve 30mm AK-630 Duet close-in weapon systems, which were supplanted with the Squall systems on later ships. 4x 35mm HCID (Heavy Close In Defense) systems are mounted on each side.

Other weapons are the two 8"/55 caliber Mark 71 guns systems, one bow mounted single 76mm, 127mm, or 203mm gun, 20x torpedo/missile tubes (capable of firing RUM-44 ASROC ASW missiles on later ships) and Mutsu with 40 anti-submarine rockets launchers.

The vessels are protected with 203mm belt armour, 105mm deck armour, and 350mm of protection around magazines, combat control centres, conning tower, reactors, and on turret faces. Dynamic armour is also used around vital areas to protect the vessel from shaped charge weapons by disrupting the shape of the HEAT jets.
