This is the all-time famous, largest wingspan in the world, only 1 mile flown, Howard Hughes H4 Hercules, or better known as the Spruce Goose. This late 1940 plane is actually built all from wood, giving the name Spruce Goose. It's intended use was for long-range transportation for WWII, but that never happened. When it was completed, the war was over. Howard Hughes, the designer, taxied it into the open, and unannounced, took off, and flew just 6 feet over the water for 1 mile, to prove it flew.
