Finding themselves unable to give chase to the newest German fighters of 1942, Spitfire pilots demanded a redesign that adopted the larger Griffon engine. The increased slipstream from the big five-bladed propeller was balanced by an enlarged tail. Roll was improved with wing clipping, and the very first gyro gunsight units were installed.
